Get to Know Yourself: Understand Your Personality and Build Self-Awareness

Scottish poet Robert Burns once wrote:

“Oh, would some power give us the gift, to see ourselves as others see us!”

Those words well highlight the challenge we all struggle with:

How can you truly know yourself? The person we are that others know and interact with?

Burns continued:

“It would from many a blunder free us.”

I’m super excited to share with you what I’ve been working on for the past two years. It’s a brand new online course called:

Get to Know Yourself: Understand Your Personality and Build Self-Awareness

What is self-awareness?

Self-awareness is the ability to identify and understand your own emotions and how they affect you.

Self-awareness includes recognizing how emotions impact your thoughts and actions. Also, how your feelings can help or hinder you from achieving your goals.

Increased self-awareness can free you from unnecessary mistakes and move you to greater success in life and relationships. It’s the foundation of emotional intelligence.

How does this help build emotional intelligence?

Increased self-awareness gives you the knowledge and understanding you need to better manage your emotions…and to better understand others and manage your relationships, too.

Increased self-awareness can free you from unnecessary mistakes and move you to greater success in life and relationships.

For our framework, we’ll be using the “Five factor” model of personality, most commonly known as the “Big Five.” The Big Five is a scientifically validated personality model that is most widely endorsed by psychologists and other researchers across the globe.

The Big Five divides personality traits into five main categories that can be easily remembered using the acronym OCEAN:

Openness
Conscientiousness
Extraversion
Agreeableness
Neuroticism

Each of these traits exist on a spectrum, meaning that you, and everyone else, exhibit them to different degrees.

In this course, we’ll take a close look at each of these personality traits. Together, we’ll examine:

  • What is each trait
  • How does it look in real life
  • Where you sit on the spectrum of each trait
  • Your normal behavior (how you act under normal circumstances)
  • Your hidden needs (the hidden personality needs you must satisfy to be at your best)
  • Your stress behaviors (how you act when you don’t meet your needs)
  • How to better reduce and manage stress
