Get to Know Yourself: Free Personality Course (Based on Science)

Learn the reasons behind why you think and act the way you do—using insights from the most scientifically validated personality model in the world, the “Big Five.”

I want you to imagine something for a second:

Imagine you could see yourself the way others see you.

This would be a remarkable gift: It’d help you identify your strengths, so you could leverage them. It would help you identify your weaknesses, so you could improve them. And it would help you see the things that get under your skin—the things that trigger you and cause you to say and do things you later regret.

Well, you’re going to learn just that.

It’ll be like getting to know a good friend for the first time…

Except, that friend is you.

To do this, you’re going to learn about the traits that make up your personality.

But this won’t be your normal “personality course.”

First, it’s backed up by years of scientific research. We’ll be using the Five Factor Model of personality (a.k.a, the “Big 5”), the most scientifically validated personality model in history, widely endorsed by psychologists and other researchers across the globe.

Second, I won’t attempt to label you, put you in a box, or reduce your personality to black and white terms.

After all, personality is complex.

You’re complex.

But you will learn about the reasons why you think and act the way you do.

So, are you ready?

Let’s start by answering 3 questions:

  • What is self-awareness, and why is it important?
  • What is the “Big 5”?
  • How does knowing this help you build emotional intelligence?

Pay attention, and you’ll start getting to know yourself—and build emotional intelligence in the process.

What is self-awareness?

Self-awareness is the ability to identify and understand your own emotions and how they affect you.

It includes recognizing how emotions impact your thoughts and actions. Also, how your feelings help or hinder you from achieving your goals.

Self-awareness also includes the ability to see how others see you.

All of this is important because it can help you to leverage your strengths, mitigate your weaknesses, and become a better version of yourself.

What is the “Big 5,” and how does it work?

As mentioned, to help you get to know yourself we’ll be using the “Five factor” model of personality, most commonly known as the “Big Five.”

The Big Five divides personality traits into five main categories that can be easily remembered using the acronym OCEAN:

  • Openness
  • Conscientiousness
  • Extraversion
  • Agreeableness
  • Neuroticism

Each of these five traits exist on a spectrum. Meaning that you, and everyone else, exhibit them to different degrees.

Through a series of articles, we’ll take a close look at each of these personality traits.

Together, we’ll examine things like:

  • Each trait and what it looks like in real life
  • How to know where you sit on the spectrum of each trait
  • Your normal behavior (how you act under normal circumstances)
  • Your hidden needs (the hidden personality needs you must satisfy to be at your best)
  • Your stress behaviors (how you act when you don’t meet your needs)
  • How to better reduce and manage stress

Consider it a mini-master class in personality.

How does this help you build emotional intelligence?

Self-awareness is the foundation of emotional intelligence.

Once you get to know yourself, and the reasons behind your emotions, you can start to manage them—along with your thoughts, behaviors, and habits.

Armed with this knowledge, you’ll also better understand others and the reasons why they think, feel, and do what they do—helping you to manage your relationships, too.

So, are you ready to begin your self-awareness journey? It’s time to get to know yourself.
